Academics

Millsaps is a small college, so students 鈥済et a lot of personal attention.鈥 It is a 鈥渟chool where everybody knows your name,鈥 as well as 鈥渁 place where every student has to work hard to stay above water; excellence is the norm, not the exception.鈥 What makes Millsaps unique is how it 鈥渂reaks the mold by providing superb education as well as fun, combining the two in ways so subtle that a student may not even realize they鈥檙e learning!鈥 The school 鈥渙ffers great courses taught by charismatic professors鈥 who 鈥渂ring the material to life...through their innovative teaching methods.鈥 鈥淐lasses are not easy, but the quality of learning is top notch.鈥 鈥淧rofessors always encourage students to discuss class material and voice their opinions and questions about it. They encourage you to form your own ideas.鈥 These 鈥渇riendly and approachable鈥 professors 鈥渃ontinue to teach outside of the classroom.鈥 鈥淭hey welcome oneon-one time鈥o further develop understanding.鈥 Students have praise for the education they are receiving saying, 鈥渃oming out of Millsaps I will be fully prepared for grad school. My professors not only lecture, but they turn the material into hands-on learning opportunities,鈥 and 鈥淚 seriously respect my school鈥檚 standard of excellence in hiring people who are wonderful at their jobs.鈥 Besides 鈥済reat professors,鈥 the school offers 鈥渁 prestigious business school,鈥 鈥渁bundant study abroad programs,鈥 and 鈥渟trong Southern hospitality and heritage.鈥 The school鈥檚 small size provides opportunities to receive 鈥渁 top-notch education, while also getting to play sports and be in clubs.鈥 Although Millsaps may not be affordable for everyone, it 鈥渟trives to be generous with scholarships.鈥 One student was pleased to report, 鈥淭hey offered the most financial assistance by far.鈥 Although student surveys were mostly positive, like this one: 鈥淢illsaps College provides the ideal learning atmosphere for liberal arts studies where they teach us how to think and not what to think,鈥 there were complaints about 鈥渢he Internet and networking capabilities,鈥 and 鈥渢he cafeteria is an area where great improvement is needed.鈥

Student Body

Is there a typical Millsaps student? Some students think so: 鈥淭he typical student at Millsaps was an over-involved, cool nerd in high school. We throw ourselves into sports, clubs, Greek life, and community service like it鈥檚 our job. It鈥檚 how we thrive.鈥 鈥淪tudents fit in by being involved in Greek life and other organizations.鈥 鈥淎 typical student is involved in many activities from sports to community service clubs. Student interests are diverse, and the student body in general is very friendly and interactive.鈥 Another student disagrees, 鈥淭here is no 鈥榯ypical student鈥 really鈥攖he most common thread is a desire to change the world (usually, with a stop at graduate school).鈥

Campus Life

鈥淪tudents at Millsaps think about their classwork first and foremost. After that, we think about hanging out with friends and having fun.鈥 The campus is 鈥渟o beautiful and filled with cozy spots that many students spend a lot of their time outside.鈥 鈥淲hile most schools have 鈥榯he quad鈥 where students hang out between classes, Millsaps has 鈥楾he Bowl.鈥 It is a beautiful area of grass and trees in the center of campus.鈥 But one student notes that there is still room for improvement. 鈥淭he campus is beautiful, but the insides of the buildings need a serious upgrade. Every time I walk into a building, I feel like I鈥檝e been transported back to the seventies.鈥 Although 鈥渕ost of the upperclassmen dorms are amazing,鈥 the 鈥渇reshman dorms are a little sketchy.鈥 On campus 鈥渢here are concerts and fun days all throughout the semester.鈥 鈥淭here are parties at the fraternity houses, and鈥ome really cool things to do from concerts to oxygen bars to laser tag.鈥 鈥淚 would definitely call it a 鈥榩arty school,鈥 despite the tough academics.鈥 鈥淭here is a lot of partying on the weekends but almost everyone still manages to get studying finished.鈥 Students also point out, 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to drink to have fun at Millsaps, though. You can always find a friend to hang out with, go to the movies, shop, or find a new great place to eat. The Millsaps curriculum even makes study groups fun (for the most part), believe it or not.鈥 Off campus, students venture into Jackson where 鈥渢here are great restaurants.鈥
