Academics

A Catholic university on the outskirts of Chicago, Lewis University provides 鈥渟mall class sizes,鈥 鈥渟mart and approachable professors,鈥 and especially 鈥渟trong programs in aviation, nursing, and criminal justice.鈥 Professors are big on 鈥渄iscussions more often than lectures,鈥 and generally 鈥渕ake lessons fun and interesting.鈥 One student praises courses within the Psychology department for having 鈥渄esigned their courses to mimic graduate school courses, and strongly emphasize research鈥nd clinical counseling skills.鈥 Students say their 鈥渙verall academic experience is a great one鈥 and praise Lewis for 鈥渃onstantly providing more opportunities for research or internships鈥 and for 鈥渁dditional student services,鈥 such as career services, which provides assistance in the way of 鈥渞esume reviews, mock interviews鈥 and 鈥渉elp applying to graduate school.鈥 These services are made available to students 鈥渆ven after they鈥檝e graduated from Lewis.鈥

Student Body

The Lewis student body is 鈥渄own to earth,鈥 鈥渟upportive,鈥 and 鈥渢ypically small-town people dreaming of going to bigger places.鈥 The size of the school and the large commuter population means, 鈥渢here is a tight-knit community within鈥isciplines.鈥 Many students transfer in from local junior colleges in the area. There鈥檚 also a 鈥渓arge amount of veteran students due to the school being considered a yellow-ribbon school.鈥 Additionally, other non-traditional and older students are attracted to Lewis 鈥渂ecause it offers online classes and is close to suburban areas.鈥 One student says, 鈥淭hough a predominantly Catholic student body, there are still many students of all multicultural backgrounds and religious practices.鈥

Campus Life

Lewis is largely a commuter school, where it is estimated that 鈥渁bout 40 percent鈥 of the student body lives off campus. Students report a 鈥渜uiet but focused and determined鈥 environment, with most focused on their studies 鈥渋n the library or computer lab.鈥 Students may also venture into Romeoville for food or the 鈥渘ature trail,鈥 but students say it鈥檚 important to know that Lewis is in a 鈥渜uiet town,鈥 so they often have to 鈥渕ake [their] own fun.鈥 On campus, the recreation center provides a 鈥渟mall arcade鈥 and 鈥減ool hall,鈥 (called Flyer鈥檚 Lounge) along with 鈥渄ecent food.鈥 Students contribute to the school 鈥渋n one way or another either through sports, STEM committees, or recreational clubs.鈥 Chicago is close by, allowing residential students to get away on weekends and check out what the city has to offer.
