Academics

Many students, particularly athletes and musicians, pick ISU because it鈥檚 鈥渇inancially affordable.鈥 However, when they get there, students find plenty more to love, whether it鈥檚 the fact that 鈥淚SU is small and the professors really care鈥, the way it fosters 鈥渟ubstantive knowledge and practical experience鈥 in its students鈥 education, or its 鈥渆mphasis on academics and school pride.鈥 Within students鈥 concentrations, the 鈥渕ajor specific professors are wonderful鈥 and students find that 鈥減rofessors don't just lecture, they provide students with hands-on opportunities鈥 and 鈥渋ndividualized personal instruction.鈥 鈥淲e do a lot of field work here, sometimes more than homework.鈥 Whether you鈥檙e a scientist or an artist, 鈥淚SU suits the needs of every type of learner鈥, and 鈥渄iversity and making connections鈥 rank high among students鈥 reasons to be satisfied with their education. In addition to its nationally recognized music program, ISU maintains standout programs in English, Psychology, Technology, Education, and Aviation, among others. Students receive 鈥渁ccess to professors鈥 and a 鈥渟trong support system鈥, and with ISU鈥檚 鈥渉igh GPA and academic requirements鈥, they feel the university does 鈥渆verything they can to help you suceed.鈥

Student Body

In concert with the unpretentious Midwestern setting, ISU undergraduates are 鈥渄own to earth and accepting of everyone鈥, as well as 鈥渕otivated and eager to learn.鈥 Students relay with some pride that they are 鈥渃onstantly studying鈥 and 鈥渨anting to receive an education for their career path.鈥 They respect the school鈥檚 鈥渄iversity鈥濃攐ne student stated a primary reason for attending as 鈥淗as black people鈥濃攁nd extol the university鈥檚 鈥済iant melting pot鈥 as well as how 鈥渧ery culturally aware鈥 it is. As a result, the student population is comprised both of 鈥渇irst generation college students鈥 as well as students of 鈥渁ll different backgrounds.鈥 鈥淓veryone is welcome here,鈥 many students underscore, so 鈥測ou never feel like you don't fit anywhere.鈥

Campus Life

ISU social life seems mostly contained on campus, and students are devoted to maintaining their 鈥済rades and homework鈥 and 鈥渢hink about how they are going to succeed.鈥 鈥淭he bar scene is pretty good鈥 in surrounding Terre Haute, and on campus, 鈥渋t鈥檚 so easy to make friends here鈥 and 鈥渢hose that get involved in clubs or sports enjoy the university more.鈥 鈥淕reek life is very apparent at ISU鈥, with nine sororities and twelve fraternities, and 鈥渦nless you Go Greek there isn't a whole lot to do here.鈥 One student jokes that party seekers over 鈥21 go to the bars鈥, while 鈥渟tudents under 21 go to frats.鈥 Many Indiana locals 鈥済o home over the weekends鈥, while others stick around to 鈥済o shopping for fun or just hang out with friends.鈥 Residents report that they 鈥渓ove living here on campus鈥 and that they 鈥渓ike to go to sporting events at the Hulman Center and concerts at The Venue.鈥
