Academics

Widely considered 鈥渙ne of the top institutions to study international business,鈥 the Darla Moore School of Business at University of South Carolina offers an 鈥渁lternative program to traditional business school鈥 through its flagship international MBA (IMBA) program (although it does offer a professional MBA and a one-year MBA as well). The IMBA program exposes Moore鈥檚 students to a combination of 鈥渋nternational work experience, education, and opportunity to learn a new language while completing [an] MBA.鈥 The program鈥檚 required core classes make lead to 鈥渨ell-rounded鈥 students. In the IMBA program, 鈥渢he first seven months are spent doing a year 鈥檚 worth of core classes. Students are very tightly woven to provide each other academic, mental, and social support. The next three (or ten) months are spent overseas learning another language鈥hen a five to seven-month internship, internationally or domestically, followed by a year of electives (in Columbia or abroad).鈥

Supporting the unique structure of the program are the school鈥檚 鈥渆xtremely talented鈥 and 鈥渟tellar鈥 professors who 鈥渢ruly bring a wealth of international experience into the classroom.鈥 These professors 鈥渢each worldwide and use cases, simulations, and other situations to help us get a better understanding of how our decisions interact instead of just reading text.鈥 They make 鈥渢he most abstract material understandable.鈥 As a result, students develop 鈥渁 deep understanding of business fundamentals.鈥 Particularly noteworthy is the Global Supply Chain and Operations Management department which 鈥減repares students to manage supply chains in a global environment, and provides students with operations management knowledge and practical training that puts them at the same level [as] engineers currently working at Fortune 500 companies.鈥

While generally pleased with the quality of their professors, students are a bit more critical of the business school鈥檚 administration which 鈥渋s new and has some kinks to work out.鈥 On a more positive note, students feel that the administration is 鈥渙pen to working with the students to improve the school community, which makes up for a lack of organization and gives students a chance to gain valuable leadership skills.鈥 One recent development that is generating a lot of excitement among the students is the new 鈥済reen鈥 鈥渕ultimillion dollar business school building鈥 which was designed with 鈥渋nput from everyone,鈥 including 鈥渦ndergrads, master 鈥檚 [students], PhD [students], [and] staff鈥 and which all hope will 鈥渂ring unbelievable opportunities for future students.鈥
