Academics

The first business school in Canada to receive accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, University of Alberta operates a full-time and part-time MBA on its Edmonton campus, an accelerated executive MBA, and a part-time program in Ft. McMurray. Integrating quantitative know-how with important qualitative skills, University of Alberta offers a 鈥渨ell-balanced education鈥 through a mix of core course work and electives. Lectures are enhanced by 鈥渦p-to-date case analyses,鈥 and throughout the curriculum there is a 鈥渇ocus on interpersonal skills and relationships.鈥 鈥淭here is a lot of group work in the MBA program,鈥 and therefore, 鈥渨ho you choose to work with, identifying your working style, and how to work with others are all vital components of a success strategy for the MBA.鈥 In complement to course work, students can participate in co-curricular opportunities, like the annual International Study Tour and MBA mentorship program. Students also note that the school鈥檚 excellent lecture series is 鈥渨orth attending鈥 and 鈥渃ase competitions are fantastic.鈥

鈥淪ince it鈥檚 a research university, most professors have PhDs鈥; however, the Alberta faculty comprises a 鈥済ood mix of academics and professionals.鈥 The classroom experience is generally rewarding, and 鈥渕ost professors are well-prepared and appropriate for their specific classes.鈥 At the same time, some professors 鈥渄eliver a better course than others and who you get is simply the luck of the draw.鈥 Fortunately, the administration is receptive to student input, and 鈥渇eedback is given from students to professors at the end of each term regarding the class and their teaching.鈥 A current student assures us, 鈥淭hey truly care and listen to suggestions on how to make things better.鈥

When it comes to the nuts and bolts, things run smoothly at Alberta. 鈥淭he MBA Programs Office does a great job behind the scenes,鈥 and, for the most part, the 鈥渞egistration process for class is well-run, smooth, and easy.鈥 At the same time, there is a bit of a divide between full-time students and their part-time counterparts. In many cases, 鈥渢he part-timers do not feel as connected to the administration as the full-timers as we are not at school during the day.鈥 On the flipside, part-timers praise the fact that the 鈥減arttime program is excellent鈥攆lexible around work schedules and amenable to work-life balance.鈥 When it comes to the bottom line, students agree that the University of Alberta is an 鈥渆xcellent value.鈥 鈥淗ighly-regarded鈥 in the Edmonton area, tuition is inexpensive, the area offers an 鈥渁ffordable cost of living,鈥 and the program is efficient (the full-time program can even be completed in as little as sixteen months).
