Academics
A small, Christian college located within the heart of Kansas, Sterling offers an intimate educational environment. Undergrads applaud the fact that 鈥渢he professors and administration actually take the time to get to know you.鈥 Importantly, professors 鈥渒now each and every student as individuals and鈥ant all of them to succeed.鈥 The majority are also 鈥渁lways available through e-mail and by phone,鈥 and 鈥渟ome even have students over for dinner or club activities.鈥 The 鈥渟chool administration has gone through an extensive amount of change over the last three years,鈥 acquiring a new president along with a number of new deans. While some regard the changes as compromising 鈥渢he excellent community and heritage of the college,鈥 others have a more positive outlook. As one junior asserts, 鈥淪terling is鈥eeding out the bad, keeping the good, and striving for the best.鈥 And an optimistic senior concludes 鈥渨ithin the next 10 years, Sterling will be [an] even better place.鈥
Student Body
The 鈥渇aith oriented鈥 students of Sterling College are a passionate and busy lot. Indeed, by their own admission they are 鈥渙vercommitted and over-involved.鈥 This is understandable given that 鈥渁s a small school, it鈥檚 easy for everyone to be a part of something.鈥 However, one senior does admit that 鈥渁t Sterling there are two major groups: student athletes and鈥rtists/intellectuals.鈥 Fortunately the 鈥渟tudents accept each other very well,鈥 and 鈥渆verybody fits in here somewhere.鈥 Undergrads tend to agree that the typical Sterling student is 鈥渨hite, from Kansas, and from a Christian background.鈥 Nonetheless, another senior assures us that 鈥渇or the most part, there aren鈥檛 students who are so conservative that they refuse to befriend someone who is not a Christian.鈥 Importantly, the student body is 鈥渆xtremely friendly,鈥 and 鈥渢here is little conflict.鈥 This sentiment is best underscored by a sophomore who shares 鈥渆veryone on campus is like a brother [or] a sister.鈥
Campus Life
The college is located in 鈥渂eautiful鈥 Sterling, Kansas, 鈥渁 small town in the middle of nowhere.鈥 Though it possesses a 鈥減icturesque downtown,鈥 Sterling doesn鈥檛 provide much in the way of entertainment. Of course, that鈥檚 just fine for this 鈥渃ommunity-oriented campus.鈥 Undergrads can partake in the normal gamut of activities such as 鈥渕ovie night, bingo, pool, ping pong, [and] intramurals.鈥 These enterprising students also 鈥渕ake our own fun.鈥 As one junior reveals, 鈥淲e have a slip 鈥檔鈥 slide in the basement.鈥 Another popular activity is 鈥渃ampus golf鈥攇olfing with a tennis ball around campus鈥濃攂ut be careful, we鈥檙e told 鈥渋t鈥檚 intense.鈥 When students are anxious to get off campus, they often head to Hutchinson 鈥渁bout 30 miles away.鈥 Hutchinson offers 鈥渕ovie theaters and basic shopping (like Target and Wal-Mart).鈥 Those students anxious for a longer road trip can visit Wichita 鈥渁bout 70 miles away.鈥 Among Wichita鈥檚 many attractions are a 鈥渟ymphony, opera, semi-pro baseball, [and] a variety of restaurants.鈥
