Academics
Montreal鈥檚 McGill University is a public research institution teeming with 鈥渋nternational recognition鈥 and amazing 鈥渁cademic and research opportunities.鈥 Students fortunate enough to attend have 鈥渁ccess to world-class resources and professors鈥 as well as a 鈥渂eautiful campus鈥濃攁ll at a 鈥渓ow cost.鈥 They also benefit from 鈥渁n atmosphere that cultivates critical thinking and broadens your perspective of the world.鈥 Though a few individuals do complain that first-year classes can be 鈥渉uge and [comprised of] impersonal lectures,鈥 they also reveal that 鈥渢he higher you get in courses, the better they become.鈥 Further, 鈥渟maller class sizes鈥 are the norm in departments such as 鈥淓nglish, History, and Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC).鈥 Regardless of what you ultimately choose to study, McGill undergrads generally find their professors to be 鈥渧ery well-versed in their subjects and...passionate.鈥 Importantly, they鈥檙e also 鈥渄edicated鈥 and 鈥渁ccessible.鈥 But they won鈥檛 let their students slack. As one undergrad shares, 鈥淭he amount of work is a little excessive during some stretches, and the grading is by no means easy.鈥 Fortunately, instructors do 鈥渆ncourage students to come to conferences and office hours.鈥 And it鈥檚 clearly evident that 鈥渢he faculty truly love what they teach.鈥
Student Body
Undergrads at McGill University take pride in the fact that their peers are 鈥渉ighly diverse鈥 and hail from a number of countries. Of course, there are plenty of Montreal natives as well. And many suggest that the 鈥渂ilingualism of local students...adds to the cultural experience鈥 as well. Looking beyond geography, undergrads here also reveal that their peers are 鈥渧ery hardworking and committed to school, spending many hours a day studying.鈥 They also tend to be quite 鈥渋nclusive.鈥 One student shares, 鈥淎ll of the students are open-minded and appreciative of the differences that make our school [unique].鈥 A fellow undergrad adds, 鈥淚 haven鈥檛 met a rude student yet. Everyone is kind and willing to collaborate or help.鈥 This attitude could be attributed to the fact that undergrads here 鈥渁re always working on personally developing themselves, academically, and culturally.鈥 McGill also boasts that its peers are 鈥渕otivated to do well and be successful and help as many people in the world as they can.鈥 When it comes to politics, students are 鈥渕ostly liberal or left leaning.鈥 And perhaps most importantly, 鈥淒espite having a large student body with nearly 40,000 individuals, the McGill community will never let you feel insignificant as an individual.鈥
Campus Life
McGill University undergrads are pretty honest about the fact that they 鈥渕ostly spend their time studying.鈥 After all, classes can be very demanding and 鈥渢ime consuming.鈥 Nevertheless, even these intellectually-minded students need to kick back every now and again. When they鈥檙e looking for a break, undergrads can turn to the 鈥渙n-campus...pubs [which frequently host] events.鈥 McGill undergrads also tend to be 鈥渧ery active in the community鈥 and often carve out some 鈥渢ime for volunteering.鈥 It鈥檚 also quite common for students to organize and stage 鈥渕usic shows...themselves.鈥 For students looking to enjoy the outdoors, the Macdonald campus has a [great] area to hike in, an arboretum, and a bird observatory just half an hour away by walk.鈥 Or, as one ecstatic student sees it, 鈥淲e have a magical forest to escape to in any season!鈥 Once the weekend arrives, it is 鈥減arty time.鈥 One knowing student explains, 鈥淔irst-year students often party [in] residence or go to local bars, while upperclassmen go to clubs more often.鈥 Lastly, hometown Montreal offers plenty of excitement. Students can explore everything from the newest cafes to museums and cutting edge art galleries. This city has something for everyone, no matter your interests.
