Academics
Set atop 300 grassy acres in the small town of Crete, Nebraska, Doane College is an independent liberal arts school characterized by its 鈥渨arm learning environment鈥 and strong teacher-student relationships. Student Body
With fewer than 300 students in each incoming class, every person plays an important role of the Doane community. Drawing largely from the surrounding state, 鈥淭he typical student is from Nebraska, middle to upper-middle class, and very involved鈥 in campus life. Out-of-staters and international students make up about 16 percent of the student body, but overall, students admit that they 鈥渁ren鈥檛 demographically diverse.鈥 At the same time, Doane recruits 鈥渟tudents with all kinds of strengths and interests,鈥 so 鈥淪tudents of all types are able to find their niche.鈥 No matter where they come from, students say there is 鈥渁n incredible community feel鈥 on campus, and 鈥渂ecause the school is so small, students of all backgrounds interact and become friends with people they may not have even met at a larger school.鈥
Campus Life
Students come to Doane for more than just its academic programs, citing the 鈥渦nique community鈥 and 鈥渇riendly atmosphere鈥 as the school鈥檚 greatest strengths. Well-rounded and outgoing, 鈥淎 typical student is involved in several extracurricular activities and leads an active social life.鈥 In particular, many are involved with Greek organizations 鈥渃ommunity service projects both on campus and in the community,鈥 or collegiate and intramural athletics; the school鈥檚 鈥渁thletic facilities are great.鈥 When they have some downtime, Doane students might 鈥渉ang out with friends in the coffee shop or go over to other dorm rooms to socialize.鈥 Though 鈥渢here isn鈥檛 much to do in Crete,鈥 the state capital of 鈥淟incoln is just 20 minutes away,鈥 and there are 鈥渕ovie theatres, shopping malls, and restaurants鈥 near campus, as well as 鈥渙utdoor recreation areas.鈥 Doane鈥檚 鈥渁lcohol policy has recently changed,鈥 resulting in fewer campus shindigs. Nonetheless, 鈥淭here is a lot of partying, especially in Greek groups and specific halls.鈥 For mellower entertainment, 鈥渟ober activities are also very popular,鈥 including events put on by the school鈥檚 Student Activities Council.
