Delaware Valley University, otherwise known as 鈥淒elVal,鈥 is a small school located about thirty miles outside of Philadelphia. DelVal was originally founded as an agriculture school, but now strives to bring its 1,700 undergraduates an interdisciplinary education with a curriculum that relies on an experiential learning component called 鈥淓360.鈥 This is very apparent in the more than 1,000 acres of land that act as living laboratories for students to get 鈥渉ands-on opportunities鈥 in 鈥渆nvironmental, agriculture, and animal sciences.鈥 There is 鈥渁 lot of technology integrated into the programs,鈥 鈥渕any work-study opportunities that you cannot find at other schools,鈥 and plentiful farm opportunities for 鈥渓ucky鈥 animal science majors that 鈥減rovide a foot in the door for a job.鈥

Professors at DelVal are 鈥渄evoted, enthusiastic and eager to teach,鈥 and they 鈥渢ry to make the material interesting and understandable.鈥 They 鈥渨ant to see students succeed and are usually enthusiastic to help.鈥 Small classes (with no TAs) offer students the ability to be deeply involved with their learning and 鈥渢o create relationships with the professors in the classes and network for different careers.鈥 Often times, students 鈥渦tilize the campus for teaching moments:鈥 the landscape majors learn on the school grounds, greenhouses and school farm land are used 鈥渉eavily by professors and used to teach students.鈥 Many teachers will use the campus in other ways, such as 鈥渢aking walks or having class outside if the weather is good.鈥

Student Body

One of the greatest strengths of DelVal is 鈥渢heir policies on respecting all people,鈥 and it is 鈥渁 place where you can feel safe, respected, and welcomed regardless of your background.鈥 This is 鈥渁 small school full of people with passion for and dedication to their field鈥 and has 鈥渆very group, and you will find your crowd,鈥 though diversity is relatively non-existent. Given the nature of the school the population is 鈥渕ostly country kids to a few city kids and everyone in between,鈥 and many students 鈥渃an be found in farm clothes with dirt on their jeans and under their nails.鈥 There tends to be a breakdown into farm/animal lovers and athletes, but all groups get along, even if they don鈥檛 interact much, and 鈥渁lmost everyone knows what career they want to pursue when they graduate.鈥

Campus Life

Beautiful Doylestown is 鈥渜uiet but decent for a college town,鈥 and it鈥檚 also 鈥渢he perfect distance from Philadelphia if you are looking to do a day trip to the city.鈥 However, there is always 鈥減lenty to do鈥 both 鈥渙n campus and off campus,鈥 such as 鈥渘ationally recognized magicians and comedians鈥n escape room, roller blading, or [a] trampoline park,鈥 all of which are completely free for students, and transportation is provided when needed. Most people are 鈥渧ery involved in clubs and devote quite a bit of their time each week to these.鈥 Many students go home on weekends and commuters don鈥檛 tend to linger during the week; 鈥済oing off campus for food is normal鈥 as 鈥渢he food could be a whole lot better.鈥 DelVal is 鈥渄efinitely not a party school,鈥 and students here are 鈥渟erious about their education.鈥 鈥淭he school endorses outdoor activities,鈥 and on sunny warm days, you can see 鈥減eople playing all sorts of games out on the massive grassy quad,鈥 laying in hammocks, and 鈥渓ots of people take walks and bike down around the large pond on the east end of campus.鈥 Many 鈥渆quine students will go down to the barn to visit the horses鈥 as well.
