Academics

Located in sunny southern California, Biola University is a unique mid-sized private college where all faculty, staff, and students are professing Christians. The school鈥檚 focus on learning is equaled by its attention to spirituality, and students find that the biblically-centered academics 鈥渉old [them] to a high degree of moral standard and accountability.鈥 The curriculum incorporates 鈥渢he things we care about into lessons (connections to real life scenarios, jobs, and the Bible)鈥 and integrates 鈥渙utside experiences such as field-related volunteer work, observation hours, and internships鈥 to offer 鈥渞igorous yet engaging鈥 programs. The integration of faith into academia is a strength most often cited by students, and the school 鈥渄oes not shy away from being countercultural in order to prepare students to preach the gospel in fields like journalism, physics, or psychology.鈥

The 鈥渉elpful and unique鈥 Biola professors 鈥渁ctually care about each student,鈥 and one student goes so far as to say the professors 鈥渨ill have your name memorized by the second day.鈥 Another adds, 鈥淭he professors are well-trained and patient when it comes to the learning process for students.鈥 Additionally, there is 鈥済reat professor-to-student communication,鈥 and 鈥渋f you miss a day of class, you'll receive an email from the professor to make sure you understand that you can come to them for help.鈥 Similarly, 鈥渢he academic advising center and counselors also help students as much as possible.鈥 Wherever you turn, 鈥渋ntellectual conversation abounds on campus,鈥 and within the classroom, students 鈥渁re encouraged to ask questions about their faith and how it relates to their lives.鈥

Student Body

Biola is 鈥渁 school full of diverse backgrounds and cultures鈥 that makes up a 鈥渨elcoming, respectful, and loving鈥 group. According to one student, not only does the community have 鈥渁 strong sense of biblical foundation,鈥 but it is also 鈥渁 very safe space to be in.鈥 Students here 鈥渧alue learning and education but keep Jesus at the center.鈥 It鈥檚 almost universally stated that Biolans 鈥渓ove the Lord and pursue Him passionately,鈥 and to that end, chapel takes place every day and 鈥渁 lot of people are a part of some ministry.鈥 The majority of students 鈥渢end to be joyful and laughing,鈥 and they are 鈥渙ften [seen] praying for other students.鈥 The general consensus is that you鈥檒l find people who are 鈥渧ery open and friendly with each other,鈥 and 鈥渉ugs are given freely at our campus.鈥

Campus Life

Biola students 鈥渁re very academically driven, but they also know how to have fun,鈥 and campus life affords 鈥渓ots of social time and hanging out鈥 in which students 鈥済o out to eat, shop, go to Disneyland, go on weekend trips, hike, [and] go to the beach鈥 There is also 鈥減lenty of shopping nearby, and cute beach towns鈥 are plentiful. Others enjoy the 鈥淎naheim packing district, beaches, Joshua Tree National Park, [and] Griffith Park.鈥 One student sums it up: 鈥淭he common saying is that anything you could want to do is within 30 minutes of Biola.鈥 Additionally, 鈥渕ission trips are very important to many students鈥 as are any accompanying fundraising activities. For those looking to stay a little closer to home, there 鈥渁re a lot of good spots on campus to hang out鈥 and 鈥渕any people [spend] meals and [do] homework together rather than alone in their dorms.鈥
